Marriage, understood not only as a union between two people but also as a harmonization of energies, finds deep support in the Divine Mother, Durga. Wife of Śiva, it is She who maintains the universe with Her feminine energy. To pray to Durga is to ask that she remove the veil of illusion from our eyes so that we can see the truth of love and relationships.

Among its many forms, Katyayani occupies a special place. In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam it is recounted that the gopīs, the young shepherdesses of Vṛndāvana, wishing to have Kṛṣṇa as their groom, turned to Her, the Lord's sister, specifically. During the month of Mārgaśīrṣa (late November-December), they fasted, eating only once a day, bathed every morning in the waters of the Yamunā and worshipped the goddess by molding a clay murti of her on the banks of the river. Their prayers were accompanied by a powerful mantra, which became famous as the Katyayani Vrata Mantra:

kātyāyani mahā-māye

mahā-yoginy adhīśvari

nanda-gopa-sutaṁ you must

patiṁ me kuru te namaḥ

(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.22.4)

Translation:

"O Divine Katyayani, great power of the Lord, mistress of mystic energies, please make the son of Nanda Mahārāja my husband. To You I offer my homage."

This prayer is not just a request for earthly marriage, but a deeper invocation to the goddess to harmonize the energies of Mars and Venus within and without. In Vedic tradition, Mars represents celibacy, separation and conflict, while Venus symbolizes love, union and harmony. To turn to Katyayani is to ask that the Martian force not hinder the free flow of Venusian energy in relationships.

Katyayani is especially worshipped on the sixth day of Navaratri, when devotees offer her red flowers, a symbol of energy and vitality (as well as Mars). The Puranas narrate that she was born from the combined energy of the gods, manifested in a moment of great wrath, to destroy the demon Mahishasura. Riding on the lion-a symbol of Mars and at the same time of the sign of Leo, domicile of the Sun-he embodies courage, justice and protection.

But in addition to her warrior power (Mars), Katyayani is also a compassionate mother (Moon). Not coincidentally, Mars is debilitated in the sign of Cancer, the Moon's domain: here the Martian force becomes fragile, emotional, sometimes conflicted. Katyayani, as a form of Durga, embodies precisely the ability to redeem and sublimate this condition, transforming Martian hardness into protection, love and dedication. This is why she is invoked to pacify conflicts, internal and external, and to open the door to authentic, pure and integrated love in family life.

Indeed, Vedic astrology reveals a secret to us: the nine forms of Durga, celebrated on the nine days of Navaratri, are associated with the nine planets (navagraha). Each can be invoked to balance a debilitated, i.e., fallen and depressed, planet expressing its most difficult qualities. Katyayani represents Mars, the weakening planet in Cancer, the sign of the mother, home hearth, intimate emotions, childhood and deepest desires.

For this reason, its worship does not fuel war but, on the contrary, calms tensions and teaches how to channel Mārgaśīr energy into love. Reciting his mantra with faith, especially during the period of Navaratri or the month of Mārgaśīrṣa (late November-December), thus becomes a sacred act of purification and harmonization: a step toward divine union, within ourselves and in our relationships.
