The eighteen Ṛṣi of the Jyotiṣa Śāstra

The ancient sages who gave mankind the science of light

Today we will discuss the eighteen great sages who, over the millennia, received, shaped and spread the knowledge of Vedic Astrology.

🕉️ The gift of Ṛṣi according to the Paramparā

In the Vedic tradition, knowledge (jñāna o vidyā) is a revelation manifested in the pure hearts of the ṛṣi, the seers who have perceived the eternal truths of the Vedas.

The Jyotiṣa Śāstra - the science of light, time and planets-is not a human-made discipline, but a revealed sacred science (apauruṣeya vidyā), transmitted according to a chain of masters and disciples, the paramparā.

The eighteen ṛṣi listed in the verse are considered the founders of the main schools of Vedic astronomy and astrology (āṣṭādaśa siddhānta).
They taught us that studying celestial bodies means understanding the rhythm of the dharma, the movement of cosmic time (kāla) and the reflection of the Divine in individual consciousness.
We were taught the law of the karma and how to observe it concretely through the movement of the planets.
We were taught that the purpose of life-and therefore of the karmic experience we are having-is to learn universal love, which we call Bhakti.

To join hands and invoke their blessing is to honor the pure source of knowledge and to keep devotion alive in our study-especially for those dedicated to the Jyotiṣa.

🌟 The eighteen Ṛṣi and their contributions.

  • Sūrya (सूर्य) - The divine Sun, source of light and consciousness. It is considered the first teacher of Jyotiṣa, since it illuminates all that exists and regulates time itself. Without the Sun we are unable to see.
  • Brahmā (Pitāmaha, ब्रह्मा / पितामह) - The Creator and "Ancient Father," the Demiurge of the universe. He handed down the first cosmic knowledge about the rhythm of time and eras (yuga) to his children. He received creative knowledge from Viṣṇu himself.
  • Vyāsa (व्यास) - Compiler of the Vedas, the Mahābhārata and the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. He received knowledge from Nārada Muni, son of Parāśara. He organized Vedic knowledge as a path to spiritual realization and also made the science of Jyotiṣa accessible.
  • Vasiṣṭha (वसिष्ठ) - Sage of the solar line, embodiment of Vedic wisdom. He taught understanding of divine law (ṛta) reflected in the motion of the planets.
  • Atri (अत्रि) - One of the original seven ṛṣi (saptarṣi). He symbolizes clarity of mind and the light of knowledge flowing from tapas and purity. Famous as the Guru of Rāma, he drew up his astrological chart as well as that of his brothers, in the palace of Daśaratha.
  • Parāśara (पराशर) - Son of Vasiṣṭha and father of Vyāsa. Author of the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, "bible" of Vedic Astrology, is the father of predictive astrology. He connected the planets to the subtle qualities of nature (guṇa) and the fate of the native.
  • Kaśyapa (कश्यप) - Ancient progenitor of humanity, he linked the Jyotiṣa to the living world, revealing the correspondences between heaven, Earth and all species. Father of the Deva, he manifested the cosmic progeny through the science of propitious moments (muhūrta).
  • Nārada (नारद) - Divine messenger, traveler of the worlds. He brought knowledge of the planets and karma as a tool for spiritual growth. He taught us how to go beyond the planets, understanding that the purpose of existence is to rediscover love toward the Absolute. He showed us the way to the Bhakti.
  • Garga (गर्ग) - Author of the Garga Horā, elaborated the practical principles of Vedic astrology. Symbol of discernment and devotion. He was the teacher of Kṛṣṇa and drafted its astrological chart.
  • Marīci (मरीचि) - The cosmic ray of light, from which visual and mental perception arises. He taught how to "see" truth through the light of the Sun and pure mind.
  • Manu (मनु) - The universal lawgiver and bearer of cosmic laws (Manu-saṃhitā). He established knowledge of time cycles (manvantara) and eras of humanity.
  • Aṅgirā (अङ्गिरा) - Master of sacred fire (Agni), connected the fire of sacrifice to the inner light and transformative power of the planets.
  • Lomaśa (लोमश) - Sage mentioned in the Purāṇa as an eternal pilgrim. His teaching concerns the perception of cyclic time and constantly moving dharma. He taught us how to differentiate the Cards of twin brothers born at the same time.
  • Paulisha (पौलिश) - Founder of the school Paulisha Siddhānta, contributed to the development of Jyotiṣa astronomical observations and mathematical techniques.
  • Chyavana (च्यवन) - Ṛṣi symbol of regeneration and healing. It connected biological rhythms to the flow of cosmic time, inspiring the holistic view of life.
  • Yavana (यवन) - The "foreign sage," represents the universal openness of knowledge. The Yavanajātaka integrates Greek astronomy into the Vedic context.
  • Bhṛgu (भृगुः) - Author of the Bhṛgu Saṃhitā, associated with individual karma and the memory of past lives. His teaching shows how the Jyotiṣa reveals the dharma staff.
  • Śaunaka (शौनक) - Wise guardian of the oral tradition, cited in the Purāṇa and the Brāhmaṇa. He kept alive the knowledge of cosmic cycles and the ritual aspect of sacred time.

🕯️ Final Invocation

O glorious Ṛṣi,
Sūrya, Brahmā, Vyāsa, Vasiṣṭha, Atri, Parāśara, Kaśyapa, Nārada, Garga, Marīci, Manu, Aṅgirā, Lomaśa, Paulisha, Chyavana, Yavana, Bhṛgu and Śaunaka,

We salute you and join hands in prayer.
Bless our eyes that they may see clearly,
our mind so that it understands the rhythm of time,
And our heart that it may remain devoted to the light that pervades all things.

Om jyotiṣām jyotiḥ namo namaḥ

(We honor the Light of Lights, the source of all knowledge).

"When we honor the Ṛṣi, knowledge is transformed into light."

Study the Jyotiṣa means not only interpreting charts and planets, but reconnecting with the chain of wise men Who guarded the truth of time and soul.
Whenever we respectfully open an astrological chart, we ideally place ourselves at their lotus feet.
