The Charter of St. Francis of Assisi according to Vedic Astrology
Commemoration of October 4
Oct. 4 marks the memory of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most luminous and universal figures of Christianity.
Canonized on July 16, 1228, just two years after his death (Oct. 3, 1226, around 5:38 p.m.), Francis represents a living bridge between the Gospel ideal and the purest spiritual realization.
📜 Date of birth and astrological reconstruction.
The most widely accepted date is September 26, 1181 (Julian calendar), corresponding to October 3, 1181 (Gregorian), born in Assisi, Italy.
The speculative time proposed by Noel Tyl in Astrology of the Famed (Llewellyn, 1996) is 16:41.
The Rodden Rating is XX, so this is a hypothetical but symbolically consistent reconstruction.
Many biographers agree that Francis was born in late September, although it is not certain whether in 1181 or 1182.
I took this date as a reference to check whether the birth chart, read according to Vedic tradition, actually reflects his life and spiritual mission.
🔭 The Ascendant and the Moon-Jupiter conjunction: the birth of a legend
At the time indicated, Pisces rose on the horizon-a sign of compassion, service and devotion. However, moving the time forward slightly, we get Aries Ascendant, where Moon and Jupiter conjunct.
This configuration forms the powerful Gajakeśarī Yoga, a symbol of unfading fame, nobility of spirit and active compassion.
- Jupiter is knowledge and spiritual guidance;
- Luna is sensitivity and service;
- Aries adds courage, initiative and ardor.
He is the perfect image of Francis: an active mystic, a "warrior of the soul" who turns devotion into action.
⚔️ Mars in the 10th house and the evidence of war
The regent of the Ascendant, Mars, is in the 10th house in Dig Bala, the position of maximum directional strength.
This indicates leadership, passion, and a tendency to assert oneself through action.
Young Francis, son of the wealthy merchant Pietro di Bernardone, reflected this energy in all its vivacity: he loved to excel, to dress in eccentric taste, to be the center of attention. His friends had elected him "king of feasts" (Vita Seconda, FF 588).
He took part in the war between Assisi and Perugia (1202-1203), was taken prisoner at Collestrada and was imprisoned for a year. Returning home, he planned new military exploits, dreaming of glory and noble titles.
But a dream - the famous "dream of Spoleto" - stopped him on the threshold of his destiny.
🌌 Mars and Ketu: the defeat of the ego.
In this card, Mars loses the planetary battle (graha yuddha) with Ketu, the lunar node of renunciation.
This is the time when the ego is defeated and transmuted: inner warfare prevails over outer warfare.
Francis laid down his arms, stripped off his father's clothes and chose the path of the itinerant monk, the sannyāsin.
In astrological terms, Mars and Ketu form a potential Pīśāca Yoga, but here they do not cooperate: Ketu wins and Mars' violence is purified in nonviolence, the ahiṁsā.
The result is a divine paradox: the warrior who wins by surrendering.
🌙 The dream as a way of awakening
Jupiter, ruler of the 12th house of dreams and visions, rises in Ascendant: the divine call comes in sleep, as mystical intuition.
Ketu, co-signifier of Pisces and keeper of the subtle worlds, confirms this dimension of dreamlike revelation.
The "dream of Spoleto" is the moment when the soul is instructed to change direction: no longer to serve an earthly lord, but Christ Himself.
🌾 The spiritual hero
After his conversion, Francis did not lose his fiery temper.
He remains courageous, enthusiastic, determined-but he shifts the battle from the outer world to the inner world.
He understood that the real conquest is not that of earthly kingdoms, but that of the human heart.
His motto "Peace and Good" is the seal of the new Mars, the Mars transfigured by Ketu's touch: the peace that comes only after disarming oneself.
💠 The mystery of Venus and Mercury: the Govinda Yoga
In Francis' theme, debilitated Venus and exalted Mercury conjoin.
This combination is known as Govinda Yoga, because it represents Viṣṇu and Lakṣmī, the union of Grace and Service.
It is a sign of pure devotion and ability to communicate the divine in simple form-just as Francis preached to the birds and spoke to the poor in immediate and poetic language.
Venus in Marana Kāraka Sthāna shows detachment from worldly pleasures and relationships.
He rules the second house (family) and the seventh house (relationships), areas that he lets go completely to devote himself to monastic life.
What would be forced renunciation in others becomes luminous freedom in him.
🔥 Jāta Rāśi and Jāta Graha: the mission of the Soul
Jāta Rāśi, the lunar sign, falls in the 10th house along with Mars and Ketu: a clear sign of karma yoga, active service as a path to liberation.
His mission is to found a new model of spiritual life based on simplicity, humility and evangelical poverty-ideals perfectly in line with Ketu, winner of the battle against Mars, the planet of ego.
The Jāta Graha is Saturn, in the fourth house: a symbol of discipline, community and service to the marginalized.
Saturn next to Rāhu intensifies the ascetic vocation and the drive to care for the least of these.
From here Fraternitas, the community of Friars Minor, will be born.
🌠 Planetary DNA and the Nakṣatra Bharanī
In St. Francis' planetary DNA, the Moon is in the Nakṣatra Bharanī, ruled by Venus (Śukra) and located in the sign of Aries.
Its symbol is the yoni, the matrix: Bharanī represents the force that generates and destroys, the power to contain and transform life.
The tutelary deity is Yama, the lord of Dharma and conscious death-a theme perfectly reflected in Francis' life, who dies to the world to be reborn in spirit.
Those born under Bharanī are active, creative and intensely transformative.
It experiences struggles, blocks, and restrictions that limit its expression, sometimes developing frustration or resentment toward such constraints.
But through these trials, the soul learns to free itself: it struggles for inner freedom, not outer conquest.
Bharanī bestows brilliant intelligence, a lively spirit, a love of beautiful things and an iron will.
In the immature stage, this energy may manifest as ambition and a desire to excel - traits visible in the merchant's young son.
In the evolved stage, it becomes unwavering faith, sacrifice and total dedication to Dharma.
In St. Francis, Bharanī reaches its purest form:
the force that no longer destroys to dominate, but destroys the ego to generate compassion.
The Nakṣatra of transformation thus becomes the seal of the saint of renunciation.
☀️ The Sun as Planet of Destiny
The Planet of Destiny (Ātma-kāraka) is the Sun, which points to the soul's deepest lesson: discovering true spiritual humility.
Its path is that of a Sun that renounces its own splendor to become light that illuminates all.
Famous is the episode of the pigs, when he asks forgiveness from the animals for offending them-a gesture that manifests full awareness of the equality of all creatures.
🕊️ Karmic origins and spiritual significance
In D3 (Drekkāṇa), Francis comes from Deva Loka, the heavenly realm.
With Taurus as his sign, his soul seems to descend from the domains of Kṛṣṇa, embodying divine compassion and gentleness.
It is a soul that descends to help men find their way back to simplicity and universal brotherhood.
🌺 Conclusion
If this charter truly represents St. Francis, then it tells the perfect story of martial transformation into universal love.
Each planetary combination-Mars with Ketu, Jupiter with Moon, Venus with Mercury, Saturn with Rāhu-describes his path from earthly fighter to warrior of peace.
St. Francis is the living example of how inner light can overcome ego, and how even the most intense energy of conquest can become an instrument of compassion.
As his Nakṣatra, Bharanī, teaches, true birth occurs not in the womb of the world but in the matrix of the spirit.
"The light of Jupiter illuminated the wound of Mars,
And Ketu's renunciation became love for every living being."
